Globe Insurance Co. of JamaicaGlobe Insurance had its genesis in 1852 with a chance meeting on a trans-Atlantic voyage, between a representative of the Liverpool and London and Globe Insurance Company, and a gentleman from Jamaica who was engaged in the "mercantile business". Later that same year, the Jamaican businessman opened an Agency for the company in Kingston and 20 years later Lascelles, deMercado & Co. Ltd. acquired control of the Agency. Over the course of the next century, the insurance business in the UK and Jamaica developed considerably and by the 1950's serious consideration was being given to the creation of a Jamaican insurance company. With Independence in 1962 boosting the self confidence of Jamaicans and creating a nationalistic feeling/fervour, the time was right for the establishment of a local insurance company and Globe Insurance was born. Our original shareholders were Royal Insurance in the UK, Lascelles, deMercado & Co. Ltd. and the legal firm of Milholand, Ashenheim & Stone. We started operations on March 1, 1965, at an office on Kirk Avenue off Church St., Kingston and enjoyed considerable success. We achieved modest but steady growth in the 1980's whilst cementing our place in the market, producing strong financial results, despite claims from two hurricanes (Allen & Gilbert). In 1990, our long association with the Royal Insurance ended when we became a wholly owned subsidiary of Lascelles, deMercado & Co. Ltd. In 2003, further expansion occurred with the acquisition of Jamaica General Insurance Company Ltd., making Globe the largest Jamaican owned commercial property & liability insurance company in the island. Today our products include the full range of general insurance services for both business and personal needs. We are proud of our long record of providing financial security and excellent service to our clients, brokers and agents. |
